One of the most ambitious course design projects ever undertaken, the Bayonne Golf Club required the moving of incalculable amounts of earth to transform a marshland on the Jersey side of New York harbor into a dunes covered landscape worthy of the Old Country. But even beyond the remarkable, faux aesthetic there is lots of fine golf to embrace here, with front nine favorites including the 184-yard Redan 3rd, the 560-yard 4th (played between towering, wall-like dunes), the 579-yard 8th (with green tucked behind a salt marsh) and the 402-yard 9th, which features a thrilling drive (across much of the 8th fairway) to an elevated target. The back nine is equally stocked but really hits its stride over a finishing stretch that includes the brutally difficult 486-yard 16th (played to a triangular green situated on a man-made point) the 491-yard 17th, (a dog-leg left along the shoreline) and the uphill, 454- yard 18th. Bayonne could only exist as a smallish private club; with several carries across the edges of neighboring holes, as a high volume of play would keep personal injury lawyers in business for decades. But there is no mistaking the huge feat accomplished by developer- turned architect Eric Bergstol; especially given its proximity to lower Manhattan, Bayonne is a true wonder of the golfing world. Cost: $3,600 per foursome / $1,800 per twosome which includes, 18 holes of golf with a walking caddie driving range, locker, lunch buffet, post golf cocktail reception tee gift and prizes.
Caddies: Each foursome will be provided a walking caddie. The base rate is included and gratuity is to be paid cash the day of play. The traditional gratuity is $80 per player.
