From The American Private Golf Club Guide by Daniel Wexler:

Though perennially rated among America’s top 100 courses, the Quaker Ridge Golf Club has forever lived in the shadow of its illustrious neighbor across Griffen Avenue, Winged Foot. The club initially played over a John Dunn-designed nine in 1915, but A.W. Tillinghast fully renovated and expanded things in 1918, then returned during the 1920’s to add three new holes (the current 3rd, 12th and 13th) and update several others. The result was a strong and varied layout which, following some new millenium restorative work by Gil Hanse, today greatly resembles its pre-World War II configuration. The outward half features several long and demanding oar 4s led by the 425-yard 2nd, (an out-of-bounds lines dogleg right), the 454-yard 4th (whose plateau greens sits above a scarily deep front-left bunker), the 478-yard 6th and especially the 437-yard 7th, a sharp dogleg right whose small, elevated putting surface backs up against Griffen Avenue. The layout’s mid-section is squeezed in around the west side of the clubhouse, where it’s led by the 359-yard 8th (where two huge rough-covered mounds 250 yards out divide the fairway) and especially the 406-yard 11th, a tricky drive-and-pitch whose putting surface is wedged tightly into the bend of a stonewall-lined creek. The scale then picks up again with two of Tilly’s 1920s additions, the 446-yard 12th (played uphill to a severely sloping green) and the 234-yard 13th, which descends to another heavily contoured putting surface. Among the closers, tops are the 576-yard 14th (where Hanse restored waves of lost Tillinghast fairway bunkering) as well as the 456-yard tree-lined 18th. While Quaker Ridge is not as relentlessly tough as Winged Foot’s West course, depending on one’s personal taste, its great variety may, for some, be more inviting.
