The Siwanoy Country Club began playing golf in 1901 and has twice moved, but it was on its present Bronxville property that the club earned a lasting place in golf history as the site of Jim Barnes’s victory (1 up over Jock Hutchison) in the inaugural PGA Championship, in 1916. At that time, the diminutive Donald Ross-designed layout was only three years old and filled virtually all of the property’s 110 acres, leaving little room for subsequent expansion. Thus, while more than 500 yards of additional length have been since squeezed in around the edges (some via a recently completed Mike DeVries restoration/renovation), Ross’s layout retains nearly all of its original routing, while remaining a classic, stylish period test. The front nine occupies the property’s northern half and initially boasts two strong par 4s (the 452-yard uphill 2nd and the 484-yard 4th - the latter a par 5 for everyday member play) as well as the downhill 210-yard 3rd and the 533-yard 5th, whose fairway is crossed by one of several brooks which occasionally affect the action. Somewhat the stronger loop, the back nine initially features the 186-yard 11th (played downhill to a very small, tightly bunkered green) before later closing strongly via the stout 477-yard par-4 15th, the 401-yard 16th (where a right-side lake threatens the drive) and the 541-yard 18th, a twisting par 5 made interesting by one final brook angling across the fairway 80 yards shy of the green. Not a facility tailored to the modern golfer, but there is plenty here that they will find engaging nonetheless.
