The Country Club: Course description (From The American Private Golf Club Guide by Daniel Wexler:):

#17 Golf Digest 100 Greatest

From its status as America’s first actual country club, to hosting Francis Ouimet’s legendary 1913 U.S. Open playoff triumph over Harry Vardon and Ted Ray, to entertain the remarkable (if overly celebrated) 1999 American Ryder Cup Victory, The Country Club has been at the center of American golf for nearly the entirety of the game’s tenure upon these shores. Golf actually was played here as early as 1893, but today’s 27 holes owe mostly to area native William Flynn, who rebuilt virtually all existing bunkers and greens and added a third nine (today’s Primrose) in 1927/ The Country Club layout used to present-day Major Championships is actually a composite, replacing three shorter Main course holes with four from the Primrose nine - four replacing three because the composite’s famed 453-yard 11th is actually a blend of the Primrose’s 1st and 2nd, and thus does not truly exist.
